Tech Thwarts Flames, Averts Catastrophe

Nationwide deploys over 50,000 Ting devices, prevents over 500 potential house fires

Thomas is a member of his local fire department and has seen what electrical issues in the home can lead to. After receiving a Ting electrical fire monitoring device and plugging it in at his own home, he found it to be unnerving discovering an electrical problem that he was totally unaware of.

The problem detected by the Ting plug-in device was not any of the outlets or the electrical service panel but turned out to be the refrigerator. The detection of an arching problem, when electricity “jumps” across a tiny gap in a connection, was discovered by this device and allowed for immediate action to take place.

50,000 Ting devices have been deployed to Nationwide customers through Nationwide’s partnership with Hartford Steam Boiler and Whisker Labs. The program has resulted in incredible success stories of potential fires prevented.

  • Ting has detected over 500 fire hazards (so far) by helping to identify dangerous electrical failures and alerting the homeowner of the issue before a fire ignites.

Home electrical fires can be devastating to lives and homes. Damages can average over $200,000 and homeowners often have to be out of their homes for months during repairs.

More about Ting: the device monitors the electrical network of a home using a smart plug-in sensor to help detect hazards, so they can be fixed before they have a chance to ignite a fire. Ting provides advanced warnings to mitigate these hazards before they cause a catastrophic loss. Ting also helps detect electrical faults in the utility grid that could damage your home. If a hazard is detected, the Ting Fire Safety team will engage to diagnose and remediate the issue and provide a $1,000 credit towards a licensed electrician if repairs are needed.

Ting also prevents water losses by detecting water interaction with an electrical system, including failing water heaters and sump pumps, and helps avoid frozen pipes with an optional alert in the event a home’s inside temperature drops too low. While predicting and preventing fire and water losses, the Ting program provides an engaging, hands-on customer experience with valuable notifications and tips, helping families and communities be safer and more secure.

A positive outcome: Thomas says he was thankful that the Ting Fire Safety team was there every step of the way to answer any questions or concerns and feels relief now his home is safe again. Admitting that after first getting the Ting device, he was unsure of its ability, but now is very happy he has this extra layer of security for his home.
