Nationwide, Chrp launch AI-powered program to help homeowners predict common risks
Initiative provides virtual home inspections using proactive loss prevention technology
Columbus, Ohio – Each year, about one in 18 insured homes will experience a claimi, often resulting in major disruptions and displacement. Behind the walls of even the most carefully maintained properties, wear and tear can quietly increase risk of home system failures.
To address those concerns, Nationwide has partnered with Chrp, a leading AI-powered home risk platform, to launch a tech-driven home inspection tool designed to proactively identify and help prevent common household hazards.
How it works
Nationwide members who have been selected for renewal inspections have the option to complete a guided photo survey of their home using their smartphone. Chrp’s platform analyzes the images against more than 400 known failure points, flagging potential issues like corroded plumbing, problematic electrical panels, or fire hazards.
Homeowners who chose to use the platform then receive a personalized report with recommendations on how to fix problems early — often before they cause considerable damage and inconvenience. In the event that hazards are identified, the inspection is referred to a Nationwide expert to review and determine next steps.
“As a customer-centric insurance company, Nationwide is always looking for ways to improve the home inspection experience for members,” said Helen Simonett, vice president, Personal Lines Property for Nationwide. “In addition to offering a modern, convenient inspection option, Chrp’s platform allows us to empower members to be proactive in protecting one of their most important assets – their home.”
Why it mattersii
- 70% of non-catastrophic homeowners’ claims originate inside the home
- Water damage (not related to weather) is the #2 claim type for U.S. homeowners
- Average total losses exceed $88,000 for fire damage and exceed $15,000 for water damage
- Electrical malfunctions cause nearly 23,700 residential fires each year in the U.S., leading to more damage than any other type of fire in the home.iii
“Water damage, in particular, is a major driver of losses,” said Zane Koeller, CRO and co-founder of Chrp. “Our platform has found that 30% of homes contain active plumbing hazards likely to lead to a claim within four years — often from small, inexpensive parts like shut-off valves or aging supply lines. We are here to help homeowners catch potential issues while they're still fixable and save them the inconvenience of having to recover from the damage.”
A smarter approach to home protection
Traditional home inspections are often limited to exterior views or outdated checklists, but Chrp’s platform embeds construction and insurance expertise into its proprietary AI models to focus on identifying and mitigating risks most likely to lead to damage, inside and outside of the home. The result is a more accurate, tech-forward approach to loss prevention.
“Providing an in-depth review — at no cost to the homeowner — may help policyholders better understand why they should care about a hazard now and what they can do to prevent a potential problem down the line,” added Simonett. “The platform is also beneficial for our agency partners because of its self-service nature and insights that help them serve our mutual customers, the homeowner.”
The virtual inspection program is available now in all states where Nationwide writes homeowners policies and will be offered to existing customers who are selected for inspections ahead of policy renewal.
