How to properly prepare for a busy hurricane season [Infographic]

Are you prepared for a hurricane? As the 2022 hurricane season approaches, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) outlook predicts a 65% chance of above-normal hurricane activity. For the entire season, NOAA is forecasting a likely range of 14 to 21 named storms, of which 6 to 10 could become hurricanes.

Hurricane season runs from June 1 to Nov. 30.

The time to prepare for a hurricane is before it hits. Proper preparation could prevent thousands of dollars in damages to your property. Follow these five, simple tips to prepare your home and potentially reduce damage to your property if a hurricane hits your area.

Assess insurance risk
Don’t wait until a hurricane is bearing down on you to wonder what kinds of damage are covered. Review your policy now and understand what is covered – and what isn’t – in the event of storm damage. Keep in mind, most policies do not cover flooding, e.g., rising waters that invade your house. Talk with your insurance agent about flood coverage offered by the National Flood Insurance Program.

Check your roof
Your roof is the first and best line of defense during high wind and wind-driven rain. Call a professional to inspect for damage and make repairs if needed. Roof leaks can damage attics, ceilings, ceiling-mounted lights and walls.

Yard cleanup
Many outdoor items can become flying debris during high winds. Move loose items such as patio furniture, grills, flower pots, bikes and other items indoors.

Seal your home
Take time before a hurricane approaches to seal every water entry point for your home. Use caulk to seal places like vents, cable and electric entry points and cracks or gaps in exterior walls to keep water out. If time allows, consider pre-installing shutter hinges that let you mount emergency shutters quickly before you evacuate.

Take inventory
Create a video or image inventory of the contents of your home. If you decide to create a video, record yourself describing each item as you walk through your home. An inventory household items becomes a helpful tool and can streamline your claims process should you have to file one.
