He had been attending daycare full-time when schools and daycares closed in March 2020.

“I remember him asking me, ‘Mommy, why am I not going to see my friends?’” says Kim, a wellness consultant in Associate Wellbeing and Safety at Nationwide. “It’s hard to explain a pandemic to a three-year-old.”

Then, after going back to daycare Kim noticed some emotional changes in her son – especially in the way he connected to his friends.

“I began noticing really small things, like more frequent outbursts,” she says. “All of these things are completely normal for toddlers, but I wanted to be able to support him and help understand what he might be feeling from an emotional perspective.”

Bloom
When she found Bloom was offered by Nationwide to its associates – a free, confidential set of resources created by the behavioral experts at Nationwide Children’s Hospital On Your Sleeves Movement – she saw it as an opportunity to learn some tools and strategies she could use now and in the future. Bloom offers short courses that help parents and caregivers build mental wellness habits, start mental health conversations and recognize when kids need additional help.

The Nationwide Foundation teamed up with Nationwide Children’s Hospital to fund the Bloom program. The program recently earned Nationwide and Nationwide Children’s Hospital the prestigious Halo Award for Best Health Initiative from the Engage for Good organization.

“We’re proud of our partnership with Nationwide Children’s Hospital to provide the Bloom online curriculum, which offers resources for families to have these conversations,” said Vinita Clements, Executive Vice President, Chief Human Resources Officer at Nationwide.

“We know in the mental health field there’s a lot of things we can do to help our children thrive, and there are things we can do to support them when they’re not doing well,” says Ariana Hoet, Ph.D., executive clinical director of On Your Sleeves and a pediatric psychologist at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. “That’s what exciting about Bloom. There are different tracks depending on your needs.”

Supporting your family’s mental health
Dr. Hoet joined mental health experts from Optum Behavioral Health and the Ohio Suicide Prevention Foundation earlier this month for a panel discussion on family mental health at Nationwide in conjunction with Mental Health Awareness Month. The panel, which included Clements and Tina Thornton, Associate Vice President of Associate Wellbeing and Safety at Nationwide, talked about the trends and issues impacting the crisis in mental health, how parents and family members can support the mental health needs of children and loved ones, what to look out for and the ways to get help.

In addition to Bloom, Nationwide offers all associates and their household members up to 16 visits per issue, per year with a counselor through its Associate Assistance Program (AAP). The Associate Wellbeing and Safety team at Nationwide provides emotional wellbeing resources including interactive digital tools, mindfulness activities and mental health training for leaders.

By using Bloom and other mental health resources, Kim says she feels better equipped to help her son. She now knows what questions to ask and what behaviors to look for in the future.

“There’s no such thing as a perfect parent,” she says. “But I do believe in being educated and having tools that help you make things easier for your children and help them feel seen.”

news,Corporate,consumer,rotator,Vinita Clements,CSR,Children's wellbeing

The move makes the company one of the leading employers in the United States regarding compensation and benefits.

As of March 1, the company has more than 1,200 open roles across the country, most of which are eligible for remote work. Roles include early-career technology, underwriting, claims, call center and finance roles.

Nationwide’s Chief of Human Resources, Vinita Clements, recently sat down to discuss the reasons behind Nationwide’s move to $21 an hour, workplace flexibility and unique ways the company is recruiting top talent.

What follows is a transcription of that interview.

Nationwide has been a leader on competitive wages for many years. Can you talk about the company’s recent move to $21 an hour for entry-level roles?
Clements: People are always our top priority, and we continue to invest in competitive compensation and comprehensive benefits. It's vital to our strategy to attract and retain top talent. We've always been ahead of the market in terms of minimum wage, especially the last several years. Back in 2016, we raised our minimum pay to $15 an hour. Then we moved to $16 an hour. In 2021, we moved to $18 an hour and certainly with the announcement our record-breaking 2021 earnings, it made total sense for Nationwide to make an investment in our people. So, we are now raising our minimum wage to $21 an hour effective April 4th, 2022.

As the company raises the floor for minimum pay, can you talk about competitiveness for pay at higher levels in the company
Clements: I would say Nationwide is very competitive in our compensation packages and as we raise the floor for minimum wage, we're very competitive in our salary offers for higher level positions such as our technology executives. We also have competitive wages for underwriting, claims and so forth. So, in raising the floor, we actually look at all of our jobs continually as we look at trends, how the market is changing, and we adjust as necessary. Offering competitive pay has been a longstanding commitment for Nationwide.

Flexibility is also important to recruit. Can you talk about Nationwide’s commitment to flexibility?
Clements: People want to be able to create a work life balance specific for them and Nationwide has been very innovative. We are certainly market-leading in terms of our flexible work models so associates have the opportunity to determine “Do I want to work one day in the office? Two days in the office? 3 days?” We have really leaned into flexibility because we know it's important to look at the entire associate experience and not just their work experience. Allowing associates to choose what is best for them gives a better overall life experience versus just the work experience.

Finally, can you talk about “out of the box” ways Nationwide is finding success in recruiting top talent?
Clements: We’ve found new innovative creative ways to recruit. We've done something recently with a LinkedIn Live where we take our Chief Technology Officer for example some of our C-Suite members to actually go on live and talk to recruits about openings. In doing that, people have a better sense of our culture. Certainly, pay gets them in the door. But then when they come and they understand our culture and experience all of the array of benefits that we offer, it makes us an employer of choice.

Watch the interview with Vinita Clements and check out open roles at Nationwide.

news,Vinita Clements

Many of my previous leaders have also served as informal mentors -- they took the time to know me and to understand my passions and were my biggest advocates in support of my development during stretch assignments. One thing I appreciated most from my leaders along the way was direct, constructive feedback. It wasn’t always easy to hear, but it empowered me to overcome challenges and become the leader I am today.

I’ve recognized the importance of women supporting women and how it fuels each other’s success. It’s why I’m passionate about helping other women reach their potential through mentorships, formal programs and everyday opportunities, including ones where we celebrate each other’s success. I believe it’s my responsibility to pay forward the advice I was given, and help women dream bigger in ways they never thought possible.

For women looking to develop their career at Nationwide, I’d say go for it! The investment in our people, the strength of our culture, and the resilience of our associates foster strong connections that will influence your career in positive ways. I believe there is always room to be better, to make our work better. Stepping back from what we do and asking how we can improve and deliver greater impact is constantly top of mind for me and it affects how I approach each day. It keeps our work interesting and expands our mindset on problem solving and on what opportunities we want to tackle. I’ve found that approach has rewarded me countless times throughout my career with stimulating work and new opportunities.

A culture that works for everyone
Nationwide is proud to be recognized for its diverse, equitable and inclusive culture where employees can develop their potential and bring their authentic selves to work each day.
